iPhone 18 Pro screen repair costs: what to know

Apple has not published an out-of-warranty screen price for the iPhone 18 Pro. Independent shops have not settled on one either, because the parts pipeline for a phone this new is still filling in.

What exists instead is a pattern from every Pro-tier launch before it, and that pattern is specific enough to work from.

Why Prices Run High in the First Few Months

A new screen needs a new supply chain, and supply chains take time to mature. In the weeks after launch, independent repairers are often working with whichever panels they can get hold of, sourced from a handful of suppliers rather than the wider market that exists a year later. That scarcity gets passed on in the quote.

This is not an iPhone quirk. Samsung's Galaxy S-series and Google's Pixel line show the same dip in repair pricing once launch-window scarcity eases, usually somewhere between three and six months in. The Pro model's advanced display makes the effect more visible on Apple's phones than most, simply because there is more expensive glass to source.

What Actually Drives the Cost

Two things, mainly.

The first is the panel itself. Pro-tier iPhones use OLED screens with a higher refresh rate and resolution than the standard model, and that has been true of every Pro release since ProMotion was introduced. A better panel costs more to manufacture and more to replace. There is nothing unusual about the 18 Pro on this front.

The second is Face ID. Apple has built the TrueDepth sensor system into the display assembly since the iPhone 12, so a screen swap is not simply glass-for-glass. The technician has to work around live sensor hardware, and rushing that part of the job is where things go wrong. This is also why the labour side of a Pro repair costs more than it does on a standard model, even when the parts themselves are comparable.

Part quality adds a further layer on top. Genuine Apple displays hold their brightness and colour accuracy closest to the original. Compatible alternatives cost less but the touch response and colour rendering can drift, and not always in ways a customer notices straight away.

Nobody has official 18 Pro numbers yet, so treat what follows as an estimate built from precedent, not a quote.

Will Face ID Still Work Afterwards?

Usually, yes. The risk sits with the technician, not the part. Careless handling of the sensor ribbon during removal is the main cause of Face ID trouble after a repair, and it is avoidable with the right training.

Ask whether Face ID gets tested before the phone leaves the workshop. A shop that does this as standard will say so without hesitation.

Repair Now, or Wait for Prices to Drop?

If the screen is already cracked, waiting is not really a choice. A compromised display lets in dust and moisture, and each day it goes unrepaired raises the odds of the damage spreading to something underneath the glass. Cosmetic scuffs are a different matter and can reasonably wait.

For anyone whose screen is still intact, a case and screen protector cost a fraction of any future repair. Buying one now is the cheapest decision available.

Genuine, OEM-Equivalent, or Compatible?

A genuine Apple display is the closest match to what shipped in the box, though it usually costs more and can be harder to source outside Apple's own network. OEM-equivalent parts sit somewhere in between; quality depends heavily on which manufacturer supplied them, so it is worth asking rather than assuming. Compatible displays are the cheapest option, and the trade-off shows up most often in touch sensitivity and colour accuracy rather than anything visible at first glance.

A repairer worth using will walk through these options before starting the job, not after.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Book

• What type of replacement display is being used?
• Will Face ID be tested once the repair is finished?
• What does the warranty cover, on both parts and labour?
• Is the price fixed, or could it change once the phone is opened?

If a shop cannot answer these plainly, that is worth noting before handing over the phone.
